"Two thousand and Twelve. What time periods are the other people here?"

"I've heard various dates from the other Green Men we've met." He said. "Nineteen forty, nineteen sixty, two thousand five, two thousand ten, twenty three twenty, and a lot more." Nick said. "We've met others from seventeen seventy nine..." He continued to list off various dates.

She gave a small, surprised laugh. "2320? How was that?"

One of the soldiers removed his hood and mask. "We just went through a portal to a world of technicolor plants, giants, and apparently magic." He said. "Would it be a stretch to say that someone from the future couldn't have done the same?"

She glared at the soldier who had spoken up. "I apologize for being surprised at people coming from three hundred years in the future. I don't normally interact with things I would have thought were science fiction."

The glare would have made him shit himself before, but after what he'd just scene rank structure and chain of command didn't really mean shit to him anymore.

"I'm just saying." He said "I stopped being suprised by things when the giant ate the scaly horse. He could tell me he serves the red fucking queen and I would believe him."

Matthew took off his own mask, turned and barked out at the soldier, "INSUBORDINATION! Don't you DARE speak to an officer like that in front of a person who we don't know will be friend or foe. Even if we are in a different world, we are still under the UCMJ, and I don't think you would enjoy the punishments we can still give you."

The soldier started to chuckle, he dropped his gun and hood and began to walk away, down the beach with a slight tilt to the jungle. "We're out'a our depth, sir." The last word dripped venom. "I don't give a FUCK about the UCMJ, the worst you can do here is kill me," he continued to walk all the time he spoke. "And I welcome that fate."

Nick sucked some air through his teeth. "Wow, interdimensional travel was NOT kind to him."

(This bit was mainly cause I like watching established practice fall to pieces due to loose screws in alien locals X3)

(Actually, he would know that what he did is desertion, and he could be put to death for that.)

Matthew sprinted forward, tackling the soldier. "Do you really think it is a good idea to say those things when you have a MAA in your group?"

(That was kinda what he was trying to make happen)

The soldier elbowed the officer in the nose, hard enough to break it before pulling out his pistol.

Matthew grabbed the soldiers wrist that was holding the gun and broke it. He pulled the gun away and jabbed him in the side with it, ready to fire if the soldier did anything.

"Just do it." He said. "I don't want to live in this crazy world."

Matthew struck him on the back of his head, knocking him unconscious.

"He's not the man you served with." Nick said. "The portal ruined his mind. We see it happen all the time."

Matthew shook his head. "He is just traumatized. It doesn't seem that bad."

"He'll be worse tomorrow." Nick said. "The psychosis claims thirty percent of all those that make the jump. He deterioration could take hours or decades, it's always different. At the rate he's going he'll be a raving madman by tomorrow morning."

Matthew stood up slowly, looking down at the soldier. "Is there any way to help him?"

"I'm afraid not." The fox said as he walked over and picked the soldier's gun up. "There is no known way to reverse the process."

He frowned. "Then what are we supposed to do?"

"You could end his suffering." Nick said. "Or take him to the Green Men at New Austin. They have a doctor from what they call the twenty third century there."

"I will bring him to the green men, whoever those are."

"How do you plan to do that? You don't even know where New Austin is." Nick said.

He turned his gaze towards the fox. "You are going to help us. You know where it is, right?" He took the soldier's rifle and tossed it to the fox.

Nick caught the rifle. "My price went up. I want some ordinance now. Explosives. C4 and hand hand grenades if you have them."

She shook her head. "We don't have much more that we can spare. Maybe back at the ship we have some more, but we are just an expeditionary force."
